FORMER GOVERNOR GARY LOCKE AND TEN CURRENT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ENDORSE PRAMILA JAYAPAL FOR CONGRESS
Immigration Reform Champion Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) Calls Jayapal a “champion for the Latino and immigrant community"
SEATTLE, WA – State Senator Jayapal, running for the open US House seat in Washington’s 7th Congressional District, today announced the endorsement of former Washington Governor, Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke, as well as a number of new endorsements from current members of Congress.
Former Governor Locke issued the following statement:
I have known Pramila for more than 15 years. As Governor, I saw first-hand how Pramila stood up for what is right when, after the September 11th attacks, she founded Hate Free Zone, now OneAmerica, the largest immigrant rights group in the state. I also had the opportunity to work closely with her on the Police Accountability Review Panel. Pramila has the knowledge, commitment, and dedication to continue the fight to expand the middle class and protect those who are most vulnerable in this country. With Donald Trump spreading a message of hate and divisiveness that would take our country back to its darkest days, we need a bold, progressive leader like Pramila Jayapal fighting for us in Congress.
In addition to Locke, Jayapal’s campaign announced a series of endorsements by current members of Congress, including Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Raul Grijalva and immigration reform champion Luis Gutierrez. In addition to the previously announced Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and US House members Donna Edwards (MD), Keith Ellison (MN), Ami Bera (CA), and Grace Meng (NY), the Jayapal campaign has now been endorsed by US House members Judy Chu (CA), Lois Frankel (FL), Raul Grijalva (AZ), Ted Lieu (CA), and Luis Gutiérrez (IL).
Rep. Luis Gutiérrez said of Jayapal:
I have had the privilege of working closely with Pramila Jayapal for more than a decade on comprehensive immigration reform and building the immigrant rights movement in Washington and nationally. Pramila has been a champion for the Latino and immigrant community, organizing tens of thousands of people, building the largest immigrant rights organization in Washington and being on the front lines of fighting deportations and detentions. She has played a critical role in helping to pass the immigration reform bill in the US Senate in 2013 and in pushing for the passage of DACA and DAPA. She understands at a deep and personal level the vital role that immigrants have played, and continue to play in our country's future. Rarely do we have the opportunity to welcome someone with such a wealth of experience on the politics, the policy and the movement for immigrant rights into the US House. I enthusiastically endorse Pramila Jayapal and look forward to working with her in Congress.
The Jayapal campaign has received the vast majority of major endorsements in the race, both nationally and locally. Senator Jayapal has the enthusiastic support of the most powerful and progressive organizations in the country: Emily’s List, the Progressive Campaign Change Committee, Democracy for America, MoveOn .org, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Locally, she has received the endorsement of more than 25 labor unions, seven of the nine legislative districts within the 7th CD, the sole endorsement of the King County Democrats, and just in the past week, sole endorsements by the state’s two largest progressive organizations, FuseWA and WashingtonCAN, and the endorsement of Gov. Locke.
