Jayapal Statement on Bernie Sanders' Announcement

[SEATTLE, WA] – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, today issued the following statement after U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ announced the suspension of his campaign for President:

“Throughout his career, Bernie Sanders has demonstrated the kind of authenticity, clarity and passion that working people need in their leaders.

I am so proud to have campaigned fiercely with and for Bernie—fighting for Medicare For All and humane immigration reform, taking on corporate supremacy and this corrupt administration, and lifting up the voices of his multi-racial, multi-generational movement for the change that will transform our country and finally take on the racial, economic and gender inequality that has plagued us for too long.

Bernie’s work — and our work — is not done. We need our movement to be energized and enthusiastic about voting to take back the White House and voting in down-ballot races in November. Our Democratic nominee must recognize the scale of the challenges we face and must welcome and embrace the movement for change that Bernie’s presidential campaign has created.

We face an unprecedented public health and economic crisis that has revealed the problems with a ‘me first’ instead of a ‘we first’ society that prioritizes the wealthy and well-connected over regular people and the common good. We need big thinking and solutions that match the scale of our crisis. I look forward to working with Bernie to continue to champion bold, progressive ideas and lead our movement forward.”

Jayapal — who endorsed Sanders for President during a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, January 20, 2020 — served as the National Health Policy Chair and Washington State Chair of Bernie 2020.
